All Blues is a monumental project marking the 30th anniversary of one of the most famous endeavors in luthiery history: The Scott Chinery Blue Guitar Collection. Originally commissioned in 1996 by the late guitar collector Scott Chinery, 22 of the world’s premier archtop guitar builders—inspired by the legendary Jimmy D’Aquisto’s Blue Centura Deluxe—were asked to build a custom, high-end archtop guitar using a unified, striking blue finish. The resulting collection became a cultural phenomenon, eventually displayed at the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On All Blues, Sean McGowan had the rare privilege of recording with seven of these original museum-grade instruments (crafted by master luthiers including Jimmy D’Aquisto, Bob Benedetto, Bill Collings, Bill Comins, Tom Ribbecke, Brad Nickerson, and Gibson), along with two newly commissioned blue archtops from modern builders Tyler Wells and Maegen Wells.

Recorded using high-fidelity vintage ribbon microphones, All Blues showcases the full tonal spectrum of these rare archtops across jazz trio settings, solo guitar arrangements, Bach inventions, and original fingerstyle compositions.
